“A Moral Question”
Is it justifiable to let a person die because she does not have money to pay her medical care? This is the case of a patient named Nikki White. Her experience can be explained by two American values: equality and materialism.
Nikki White contracted a terrible disease, systemic Lupus Erythematous. She lived in the United States of America where she had too much money to get health care insurance under welfare, but too little money to pay her health care, so, she could not able to pay for her treatment and passed away at the age of thirty two years old.
To begin with, equality means that every person has equal opportunities; everybody is important. In a positive way, equality gives to society the same status and equal opportunities. However, in this case, we can see that she needed help because she was not able to pay her medical care, but no insurance company helped her. Sometimes poor people are not only ones who have needs, Nikki had it to. Another American value is materialism. This means preoccupation with material objects, with a disinterest in rejection of spiritual. Again, this value has two sides. In a positive way, materialism encourages enterprise and use of resources and increases standards of living, but for Nikki this value gave her a negative experience. Insurance companies were more interested in how much money she had than she was sick and she needed a treatment. They were seeing only their own interests, money, before hers.
I was heartbroken to know about Nikki White, because every person is unique and cannot be evaluated as an object. As the author stated “She spend the last months of her life frantically writing letters and filling out forms, pleading for help.” There was too much at stake for Nikki. She was sick, and I can feel her agony. Doctors and insurance companies make me question, what are their ethics? Doctors and insurance should really focus on the patients necessary. They should not act selfishly.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that a person’s life should be evaluated by equality not by how much money she has. One life is precious and cannot be bought. Doctors should be given the best effort possible to save a life, regardless of the money, but rather acting with ethics and humanism.

“Styles of Learning”
Do you know how many modalities of learning are offered at college? This essay is about three different styles of learning: face to face, online and hybrid classes.
One common style of learning is face to face; this means in a classroom. Base on my personal experience some advantages include: students who attended class more often achieve higher test score because they ask questions to the teacher, absorb more information, can share and discuss ideas, do not feel confused and they also improve their speaking, and the class is more interactive. To illustrate, students have the opportunity to talk and debate with one another in a collaborative way. On the other hand, face to face style has some disadvantages students must follow a schedule and they usually get distracted in the classroom. A form of mediation is students should turn off their cellphones to avoid distraction in the classroom.
Another modality of learning is online; this means having to use the internet to take your courses. According to my classmate Dayana, there are many advantages of online classes that include: time management, students do not have distraction, they can improve their listening, taking notes and they also improve their understanding. Furthermore, students can choose the time to study. In contrast, there are some disadvantages: students cannot ask questions, they waste time to replay the video if they do not understand, and sometimes students feel confused and bored. One way to mediate that disadvantage is research more information after the video finished.
Last of all, hybrid is another type of learning; this means the classes are a mix of face to face and online. The same course is taught in a flipped format. For example, I watched a lectures called “Human Guinea Pigs: Involuntary Medical Experimentation-A Global Perspective” by Beth Lilach. Some advantages that I have seen are: I improve my note taking, hearing and my speaking. After watching a video online, I could ask questions to my teacher. One specific example, I am taking notes faster and if I do not understand the video the professor could explain in the classroom. A disadvantage is students could feel confused to make a mix schedule, but one way to mediate this is to look for help with the counselor.
In conclusion, all universities are teaching on those ways: face to face, online or hybrid. Each person has a dominant modality of learning in which they feel more comfortable. Therefore, it is advisable to recognize what you prefer by the techniques.

“Volunteerism”
Would you like to become a volunteer? Volunteerism is the opportunity to help someone else by giving your time and effort. It is the best opportunity to serve your community. To become a volunteer you must know the benefits of volunteering, the local volunteer options, why would you like to become a volunteer, and how you can make a lifelong impact on the people.
First, becoming a volunteer can give you countless benefits. Nothing is more rewarding then helping others, and watching them grow on their weaknesses. In addition, when you are a volunteer, you can develop or learn new skills. You also have the benefit to train on your career before getting employed, and volunteerism also connects you with the community.
Second, there are many options available for you. Becoming a volunteer takes only a few minutes and it is easy if you use these web sites: www. nyservice.org or www.nycares.org. These web sites explain what organizations are near you, and which one is the best fit for your interest. You can apply to work with one of these organizations. Furthermore, a QCC volunteer fair shows some important and interesting opportunities to be a volunteer. A few volunteer options that caught my attention were: Guide Dog Foundation, In Service Trainings, The Service Learner, Reading Partners and Queens Library Volunteer. These activities are ways to show your generosity to a person’s life, and you will be in touch with people who have disabilities.
Third, volunteerism is the way to make a lifelong impact on people. When you serve, you also learn. Volunteers can change a person’s life when they are most needed. For example: homelessness, a homeless shelter, blind people, and the illiterate. For example, my classmate Heithen helped the blind people during the revolution in Egypt. Heithen and others were trying to get money from the government to give them a treatment. As Heithen explain, “It was a precious experience because I made someone else happy”
Fourth, I would like to become a volunteer because with volunteerism I will gain valuable experience such as knowledge, friends, professional contacts, and spend time with kids, adults, and people with disabilities. I get personal growth, and volunteering is also a daily inspiration for me and others. In my own life, I was a volunteer in my high school. I had the opportunity to be part of the math team in my class. My team and I helped others to understand and resolve the different math exercises. It was a wonderful experience because it also made me develop more my skills in mathematics and feel my classmate’s love. That experience will always be in my mind, and I feel proud to have done it.
As we have seen, volunteerism offered countless benefits, great locally opportunities, interesting reasons why you would like to volunteer one day, and the way to make a long life impact on the community. Volunteerism is always reciprocated.

“Movie Review”
Have you heard of informed consent? Informed consent means doctors have to tell to patients the risks of any medical procedure. Any facts are necessary to form the basis of an intelligent consent by the patients to the proposed treatment. Unfortunately, there are several examples in medical history where this rule is not followed.
The movie Miss Evers Boy’s was written by David Feld and Walter Bernstein. It shows a true story about the Tuskegee syphilis study in Alabama from 1932 to 1972, in which hundreds of Africa American men with syphilis were recruited to watch them die slowly, and painful, despite a cure having been developed. Some connections and personal opinion can be explained for this controversial film.
First, during the 1930’s people were poor, uneducated, and vulnerable to the doctors. That is why doctors conducted involuntary experiments without their consent. This film changes my thinking about America because I did not believe this kind of injustice was possible in the U.S. One important piece of literature “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot describes how doctors took Henrietta’s cells without her consent to develop advances in medicine. That happened with African American men because the doctors did not informed consent about the risks of medical procedure. Furthermore, Henrietta was treated for free, but doctors used her cells as research subjects as a form of payment; this connects with “Miss Evers Boys” movie because African American also were used for studies, and researches offered them incentives like free physical exams, hot meals, plus fifty-dollars to their family after their death. Another example is “Human Guinea Pigs: Involuntary Medical Experimentation-A Global Perspective” lecture by Beth Lilach who explained how the Unit 731, a group of Japanese, conducted horrific experiments such as amputations, and live autopsies to Asian without anesthesia. The Unit 731 group and Doctors in the Tuskegee study were withholding information in which patients did not refuse to participate because they did not know the studies consequences. These examples are clear evidence of involuntary consent and violations of human rights. It makes me think that it is very important to fight for our rights, assert our democracy, and prevent these kinds of abuses from happening.
Second, I really recommended this film because it contains a powerful knowledge. Its contents help us to learn from our history to every time make our voice heard, and never let the governments have control over ourselves again. I also was heartbroken and upset to watch Miss Evers Boy’s movie because the doctors’ behaviors were deplorable, and dishonest. Their actions were inhuman because doctors treated African American men as if they did not feel any painful or agony. There is a common proverb “We must not see any person as an abstraction” this means nobody is an object to be use whenever they are needed. Every person is unique in their own way.

“Abortion”
Should abortion be legal? The controversial issue of abortion should be legal or not divides the American thinking. Some people say that abortion is a crime but the following reasons will show why abortion should be a woman’s right.
First of all, a baby should not come into the world unwanted. Having a baby means a big change in a female’s life, and body; that is why having a child is a very important decision. Unwanted pregnancies usually carry several consequences. In my own experience when I was pregnant, I met a woman who did not love her baby. Her mother forced her to continue with the pregnancy, but she did not care herself. She did not go to the checkups, eat well, and did not take the prenatal tablets. In addition, she smoke and drank alcohol. Every doctor and nurse tried to help her because of her problems, and she had maternal depression. Finally, her son was born underweight and the lady’s mother ended up rising the little boy to avoid any possibility of child abuse.
Second, reproductive choice protects a woman from financial disadvantage. Women who choose abortion do so because they do not have the financial resources to support a child. Having a child is an important responsibility and parents have to be able to secure his/her future. Furthermore, giving birth would interfere with women’s education and job. In many cases women have to stop studying or working because of pregnancy tiredness, and this increases the poverty rate in our country.
Third, women who deny abortion are more likely to be on public welfare. 76% of women who were not able to obtain abortion need government help. They are receiving public assistance like food stamps, health insurance, free housing in the section-8, or free day care. An increase in family size makes many people vulnerable to be below the poverty line.
On the other side of the issue is the opinion that women should give their unwanted babies to people who cannot conceive. I disagree with this thinking because the percentage of infants given up to adoption in the U.S. declines to 9%. The URG study shows that the drugs or alcohol problems are genetic. People who adopt usually learn about the child’s family history, and do not choose children who have psychological, emotional, drugs, or alcohol problems. As a result, the most of the unwanted babies are killed, abandoned or used to ask for money because mothers do not finish the adoption process.
In conclusion, abortion is a women’s right that should not be limited by governmental, religious, or society authority. Women are the only ones who must determine their future.

“The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”
Do you read and understand everything when you said “I agree” in a contract form? How would you feel if you were used to revolutionize the medicine field but your name is not even known?
Henrietta Lacks was born in Virginia in 1920’s, and at the age of thirty-one she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. This was the way how doctors notices her cells never died. When she started her cancer treatment, she signed a form where she gave consent to use herself a research subjects, but this was withholding information to give an intelligent consent of the procedure. Base on this, doctors took her cells developing the most important tools in medicine like polio vaccine, in vitro fertilization, cloning, and chemotherapy. This essay shows why doctors do not have the right to use her cells in their researches. What information would doctors have to give her to sign the consent? If doctors had given her all information, had she given her consent? Why do we have to read consent forms before signing them?
First of all, doctors did not have the right to use her cells in their researches because they were withholding information and did not inform all the details about the research objectives. She did not have any idea that her body or her cells were going to be used as research subjects. Her family also did not give their permission to use Henrietta cells in any study. In addition, Henrietta was an uneducated lady. As Skloot stated, “for Henrietta walking into Hopkins Hospital was like entering a foreign country where she did not speak the language.” Evidently, everything was incomprehensible and strange for her. Doctors did not respect the human rights, and abuse of Henrietta’s ignorance to sign the form. They were seeing only their own interest.
Second, doctors had to give her complete information before signing the consent form. This information had been clear, and comprehensible. She also had to know the objectives of the study, her benefits, responsibilities, risks, and rights. In addition, Henrietta must decide if she would like to be remaining anonymous or if she wanted her name to be recognized by science. Finally, she had to agree to the amount of royalty for her medical contributions.
Third, if doctors had acted honestly, and explained her what she was going to sign, and all then data that I mentioned before, she would sign the consent form because she would have been benefit of a multimillionaire-dollar medical industry in which one she was the main subject. As a result, this could be the opportunity to have and give her family a better future instead of be in the poverty line. On the other hand, doctors did not because of the discrimination, and she was uneducated, thus she will not understand. It was clearly a racism story where doctors took advantage of her.
Fourth, reading the consent forms is our duty as patients. We are the masters of our destiny, so doctors must respect our rights, beliefs, and religions. In the past it was very common that doctors hold back information or deceive their patients, but today there are laws that governing the practice of medicine. At the present time, hospitals have quality workers who explain the medical information on a clear and comprehensible way by phone, sign language or our main language. So never sign something that does not make sense.
In conclusion, Henrietta Lacks gave us an important legacy. I strongly belief nobody in the world has not been injected by polio vaccine, so everyone has something of her. She also reminds us that this kind of injustice cannot happen again. Making our voice heard is our right, and giving informed consent is doctors’ obligation.

“Immigration”
Do you know how many problems the immigrants are facing when they come to the U.S.? Historically, immigration has been a controversial issue because some people do not assimilate that the U.S. is a multicultural country. The first settlers came from Europe, but today the largest number of immigrants comes from Latino America, and they face several adversity which ones have been change in opportunities.
First of all, immigrants face discrimination by Americans, and others problems like language and jobs. Americans think immigrants seem very different and did not understand their culture or customs, so they cannot become real Americans, that is, why immigrants suffered hostility and many cases of violence. It is very difficult learn a new language, and sometimes it is also expensive to immigrants. They usually come with debts from their country, so they have to work a lot and all the money that they earn is to paid, self-maintain, or help their family. The result is that they gradually abandon the idea to study a new language. In addition, many Americans abuse of the immigrants’ situation and give them the most difficult work with the lower payment, and sometimes immigrants are mistreated. Furthermore, immigrants face many problems to find a job because of legal status, language problems, or Americans do not want hire them, so they could not succeed and keep themselves above the poverty line.
On the other hand, immigration has changed from the past. Today, there is more equality and more rights for immigrants. The U.S is a diversity country and Americans have assimilated this idea. The government takes more control over the employers with the authority to stop the immigrants’ abuse, and also companies need more people who speak a different language than English. There are many immigrants who change their life with high level of education or better jobs. There are many Americans who agree that immigrants are very important to contribute to the country. For example, Google and Intel were started by immigrants, so they increase the economy by paying taxes. It is evident that an immigrant provides much more to the country.
In my personal opinion immigration contributes far more to government because of immigrants’ labor which helps in the economy growth. Immigrants are very hard working people who love to study because they want a better future. When an immigrant comes to the U.S, they do not only pack things; they also pack dreams, goals, and desires to achieve them. Experts predict that by 2050, the number of Latinos will be more than 100 million, so we could expand our culture how the Europeans did in the past.

Level Playing Field
What does equality mean in the America today? To being with, equality means is the same opportunities or treatment for everyone: nobody is better than other. The first perspective on the meaning of equality says that there are no differences among Americans. However, it is idealistic view, so it is not real because Americans are not the same. One reason is that people are treated base on disability, and another reason is gender.
Protected groups do not have a level playing field. They usually face discrimination, and they are not integrated to society at all. They had difficult to qualified for jobs because many employers resisted hiring them. Employers say that they have to accommodate disabilities according their needs, such as special desk, ramps, elevators, and others. It is expensive and employers despite the idea to give them an opportunity to success. Furthermore, women also face discrimination in work places. For example, they earn 33 cents less for every dollar than men with equal experiences earned for equal work. Women also are not qualified to do labor force because they are considered the weaker sex. For instance, in the army they are restricted to do some kinds of work in the war bases because soldiers think women are not sufficient strong to fight with others. These are clearly evidence of inequality, and are not appropriate. First, because they could not achieve success which affects their income, quality of life, buy a house, or a car. Second, they could feel depressed because of discrimination. Americans should include these people, and government has increased the visibility of them into the community to show a real equality.

Could a good education change the teenager’s behavior? In the article "Good Schools can Make Low Income Teenagers Healthier", the author explains that good schools make them healthier, and less likely to participate in risky health behaviors such as alcohol, drugs, and having unsafe sex. In summary, “Better education will lead to be better health."
I found an important point when the author said, “Create a much large number of schools that serve kids well." This is very important because schools must work extremely hard a standard education. Teachers and students must make their best effort. Teachers have to push their students up but explaining the only the way to be successful is studying. Teachers also can help their students with scholarly activities which keep student's mind busy like being part of a sport team, music, or art. These things make student's mind and body healthy.
One important piece of literature that I read in my ESL classes is "The Diary of Native American" by Alexie explains the life of Junior, a Native American boy who one day decided to change his life. He studied in a reservation school and lived with alcoholic parents, and his robber sister. He applied to an out-site reservation school because he wanted a better life for himself. He did not want finish his life like his parents or his sister and he did it. He changed his life because he got qualify education. In the reservation he just saw violence, drugs, alcohol, but when he arrived the new school he saw goals, and his dreams realized.
Next, parents also play an important role in their children's life. They really need to pay attention in what their children are going. In poor families is common that both parents work, and the problems is that parents are more focus in make money than care their children's behavior. They have to put activities and obligation in the house to avoid any thinking of inappropriate behavior. Education is not just the school place; it is also in our home, and our society.
Finally, I strongly believe that values are very important in teenager’s life. Today the culture to teach values has almost vanished. Education is not in the brain because it is also in the heart. There is a famous proverb in my language "of what is full your heart is what your mouth spoke, and how your body acted"; this means all of you is based on your acted”; this means all of you is based on your feelings. Teenagers could change the world by education, in schools, house, and by educating their hearts.
In conclusion, schools that serve teenagers well involve many things and many people but this is not impossible. We can do it if we intent to do it. Education is the most powerful weapon to avoid unsafe behavior, and make a better future to teenagers.
